PURSUE LIFE SCIENCES RESEARCH IN THE U.S.
Applications will open in summer 2026.
The Peter Grootenhuis Life Sciences Internship Grant supports ambitious life sciences students and recent graduates from the Netherlands who wish to gain research experience in the United States. By helping cover the costs of an international internship, the grant makes it more accessible to pursue opportunities that contribute to advancing human health. At the same time, it enables recipients to expand their scientific expertise while gaining valuable professional and personal experience abroad.
ABOUT PETER GROOTENHUIS
The grant is named in honor of Peter Grootenhuis, a Dutch-American medicinal chemist who helped develop three FDA-approved drugs while working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. These breakthroughs significantly improved life expectancy for people with cystic fibrosis.
After completing his Ph.D. in the Netherlands, Peter faced challenges securing funding for a postdoctoral position. He eventually received a NATO fellowship at University of California, San Francisco, an experience that shaped his career and future. He later moved to California, where his work made a lasting impact on global health.
This grant honors his journey and supports the next generation of life sciences researchers pursuing opportunities abroad.
