GLOBAL HERNIA RELIEF

The Global Hernia Relief Foundation is a small-scale, committed organization (NGO) with one clear vision: to improve the quality of life for underprivileged patients with large inguinal hernias in developing countries.
How we do this.
By performing high-quality inguinal hernia surgeries by a specialized surgical team of volunteers, free of charge, as well as providing general medical care, training and education for the local health care providers.
What is the problem?
Approximately one in four men and one in fifty women will develop an inguinal hernia in their lifetime. With annually 800.000 operations in the United States and 30.000 in the Netherlands, inguinal hernia repair is one of the most frequently performed operation by general surgeons, worldwide.
Both in the United States and the Netherlands, patients have quick access to professional care, but in developing countries (where also one in four men are affected) this is often not the case. In those countries people usually walk around with there growing hernia, often from birth.
Untreated hernias can lead to serious problems or complications and usually lead to enormous limitations in daily life.
The inguinal hernias we encounter in underserved countries are often extremely large. Due to the lack of surgical care, these hernias sometimes extend to the knees. Besides physical complaints, this additionally prevents many men from engaging physical activity (labour), becoming socially isolated and not finding a partner. For many men this means they can no longer work and support their families. Global Hernia Relief helps these patients regain their normal lives.
