History of the Awards

The Ambassadors’ Awards were established and endowed by three former U.S. Ambassadors to the Netherlands: J. William Middendorf II (1969-1973), C. Howard Wilkins, Jr. (1989-1992), and K. Terry Dornbush (1994-1998).

The first award, named after Ambassador Middendorf, honors the 1782 Treaty of Amity and Commerce and advances amity in commerce, culture, or politics. Ambassador Wilkins included friendship through business, banking, leadership, government, diplomacy, arts, sciences, entertainment, and sports. Ambassador Dornbush focused on philanthropy, education, and culture. The Ambassadors’ Awards embody the Dutch-American experience and strengthen our bilateral ties. The NAF honors the legacy of these ambassadors by celebrating people who best exemplify the enduring Dutch-American relationship.

In 2024, the NAF combined the three Awards into one Award category, The Ambassadors’ Award.
