Michiel van Schaardenburg

Michiel van Schaardenburg concluded a 34-year career in international banking, which took him to seven countries before settling in New York in 2003. His last position in 2016 as a Managing Director was to help set up the regional office for Rabobank in North America to meet requirements of the Dodd-Frank Act and the Enhanced Prudential Standards. Previously he held a variety of management positions with Rabobank, RBS and ABN AMRO Bank, covering commercial and investment banking, as well as general management. He served on the Executive Committee of the International Institute of Bankers in NY, which advocates for the interests of foreign banks in the U.S.

Mr. van Schaardenburg obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees in business from Erasmus University Rotterdam, which included a summer at the Business School of Michigan State University.

During his professional career he participated in executive seminars at Ashridge in England and Chicago University’s Booth School of Management. In 2012 he obtained U.S. citizenship while maintaining his Dutch nationality.

He has been involved in various charity and volunteer organizations such as Rotary International in Chicago and Aruba, and he chaired the Dutch businessmen’s forum in Hong Kong and Sao Paulo.

His engagement with the NAF started from 2011 to 2012, when he was a member of the Audit Committee, a position he relinquished due to a two-year assignment to Mexico City. In 2016 he joined the Board and he was appointed to the Audit Committee again. In addition to general Board responsibilities, he has contributed to improving the procedures and collections of the loan program. In 2017 he assumed the responsibility of Treasurer, focused on safeguarding the NAF’s funds, providing accurate reporting and improving the efficiency of the office.
