NDT | An American history
“If you see only one live performance this year,” wrote The New York Times, “Nederlands Dans Theater is the one to see.” NDT is one of the world’s leading modern dance companies. We perform regularly in international festivals and in cultural capitals across the globe – from Madrid to Melbourne, Stuttgart to Singapore. Our success draws deeply on American creativity. In the USA, and especially in New York City, we have a rich history of collaborating with dancers, choreographers, theaters and dance companies. In 1972, our first time performing in New York, we gave fifteen consecutive performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Pulling together these artistic forces, our company is famous for renewing the art of modern dance.
Idiosyncratic and ambitious, NDT has always had its own unique place within the modern dance movement. The company stands out. From its early years, choreographers Glen Tetley (US) and Hans van Manen (NL) infused NDT with an avant-garde aesthetic that proved hugely appealing to the public. Their productions put the company instantly on the global map. A long list of internationally acclaimed choreographers followed: Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe, Nacho Duato, Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke. Today the company is led by artistic director Paul Lightfoot with his creative partner Sol León.
Out of our forty-five dancers, eight are from the USA, a representation unmatched by any other country. NDT invests in their creative development. We set challenges to inspire all of our company’s expressive potential as dancers and choreographers. In return, this international mix adds enormous value to the artistic signature of NDT and to the development of other dancers and choreographers. The company presents ten new major works annually, which is considered exceptional in the industry.
Fall 2016, NDT will be making a splash in New York by presenting a series of dance performances. With undoubted press attention and popular appeal, the company aims to strengthen its professional and personal ties with New York audiences. To do so effectively and involve as many people as we can, we need funding, where we very much rely on you.
In coming years, as part of a long-term scheme to strengthen our ties with New York, we are planning:
- a New York edition of our acclaimed training program for young emerging dancers, NDT Intensive
- a new series of performances for spring 2018, as part of a season celebrating the eightieth birthday of the internationally acclaimed composer Philip Glass, whose music inspired several of the company’s signature ballets by house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot
- ongoing partnerships with our New York-based cultural partners
