Craft in Focus Festival New York
3 & 4 June 2017
VIP opening night 2 June 2017
Venue: Industry City, Brooklyn

The annual Ambacht in Beeld / Craft in Focus Festival in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is an interactive, hands-on event focusing on master craftsmanship, and inspires a large audience of 15,000 visitors.

After four successful editions in Amsterdam, in June 2017 the first edition of the Craft in Focus Festival New York will take place at Industry City, Brooklyn. This festival presents over a hundred hands-on workshops, inspiring lectures by renowned international craftsmen, master classes for professionals and international outstanding documentaries on master craftsmanship, with participating master craftsmen and -women from a.o. the Netherlands and the USA.

For example we offer an exclusive diamond polishing master class, a workshop Star Wars Origami, a lecture by the Dutch Rijksmuseum, a screening of The birth of Saké, and a master class by renowned guitar builder Flip Scipio (who builds and restores guitars for Ry Cooder, Norah Jones and Paul Simon).

We partner with the Rijksmuseum, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design, the Museum of the City of New York, the Metropolitan Museum, the General Society for Mechanics and Tradesmen, the New York State Museum and many more.

Our media partner is HEARST Inc., with the magazine Popular Mechanics (7,8 million readers). In total the monthly media reach of this magazine is 15 million readers.

Mission:
In a world where children are swiping their iPhones and 3D printers are building houses, it is our mission that the art of true craftsmanship will survive, and that it will thrive. In a time of serial mass production and consumption, it is important to revalue the beauty of handmade quality products. We want to share the knowledge of passionate, highly skilled master craftsmen with a wide audience of all ages.

Shared heritage:
New York and Amsterdam have a centuries old shared cultural heritage: carpenters, diamond polishers, millwrights. Many Dutch craftsmen emigrated to New Amsterdam, later renamed New York. We will emphasize the rich cultural commonalities, through a specifically curated series of lectures, master classes and screenings.

Partner:
We invite you to partner with us and be part of a very special event, with master classes, films, workshops and lectures. We present a thoroughly curated, interactive, hands-on, inspiring program focusing on fine craftsmanship.
